This voice-mail came into my main line (after hours). My office 800 number was frequently misdialed and we would receive calls that should have been to a government agency in Florida. The office Administrator, Jenn C, was brilliant to take the time to record this.. and now here it is on the internet.

I spammed to a select few on facebook - either those that had regular insightful, funny or high brow status updates, or those that just piss and moan for no reason.. I can guess which one you are!

  2. Here's a discussion topic Darryl, should the Mactaquac Dam be removed, revamped or left in place with no generation capability?

I think that leaving the dam in place with no generation capacity is a ridiculous idea. There seems to be a lot of proponents though. I don't get it.

Either revamp it and continue to take advantage of the green energy or get rid of it and restore the river to its natural state. The third option is short sighted and will only serve short term election goals of the government of the day.

    1. Andrew... yep, govt needs to spend millions and take years to consider the 3 options. Give me a couple of hundred bucks, and I will do the study. There is clearly only one option. Retrofit or rebuild and get the power flowing. The only environmental impact of hydroelectric is the creation of a headpond. This was done 40 years ago, and it turned out to be a positive impact. Demand for electricity is growing last time I checked, and eliminating a "green" generation solution would only require replacing the supply with a cheaper less green solution. OR we can tear the dam down, and build a coal burning station or nuclear power plant in its place...that would be the solution!

      Delete
    2. so this may be a stupid question but what is the impact of removing the dam? would boating above the dam disappear? isn't that marina above the dam just dam water? what would be the impact below and above the dam? i'm envisioning the saint john river as i've seen in pictures from the 40s and 50s, when there was an island in woodstock and places up above woodstock you could walk from one side of the river to the other? what about the impact of people who've paid for real estate that they intended to be river accessible and would be now not be? these is meant more as questions then anything...thanks

      Delete
    3. I understand that there would be little visible impact below the dam (with the exception of flood control. The head pond is a much different story.. you are correct that property values would be significantly affected. As a house on a "lake" will become a house high on a hill overlooking a silty, mucky debris field. Of course in decades, this would be replaces with alders and other vegetation, however, clearly there would be a significantly different look and value to the property.
Most significant, I expect hardest effect on private property owners would be the backwater areas that are not normally flowing with water (cottages and camps) would end up on hillsides far away from water. Commercial ventures - hotels, resorts, B&Bs would find themselves out of business.

  3. This may not be a popular "post" as I am not bitching. I want everyone to know I like my life, my friends, my job(s) my family and home town. There are enough folks out there complaining that I do not feel the need to add more to it. This is Thanksgiving day. I have so much to be thankful for .... as most of the people reading this do as well. My only comment is this... if someone has a legitimate complaint instead of just "bitching" about it, try offering a possible solution. Positive attitude generates positive results.

If I, a non-native stopped traffic in my subdivision for half an hour, I would be rather firmly placed in a paddy wagon and be spending a night or two in jail. What bullshit we have to put up with this!!

    1. Native culture seems much more in touch with and more concerned about nature. Water is a shared resource that can be ruined. Most decisions drivin by money let money become the only issue. Fracking will change some water and land use forever, forever! I cheer for everyone who protects nature. Government should build roads not climb in bed with corporations. Government fails in business. Examples NB Power, NBLCC. My vote goes to my native brothers. Protect Mother Earth!

  7. I wonder what they used for 'sacred fires' before truck tires were invented. It's high time the fracking issue came to the forefront but it is also time to take a look at the native issue in the modern day.

    1. Has anyone seen what the Anti-Shale Gas group has commented on the Native protests? Are they pro or anti these actions??

    2. I am amazed by the racist innuendos by some that have posted on this issue, grow up and enlighten yourself. I have no time or patience for racism ... NONE ... what-so-ever. People have the right to protest peacefully and our native community have always stood up for the environment and land use rights and I for one am thankful to them. Many other citizens, in fact my very own neighbours, have been protesting fracking and now we know what will happen when the drilling rigs try to roll down your road or subdivision and the citizens band together to block them. The police will use violence to remove you. I am ashamed to be a New Brunswicker today, ashamed of our government's inability to deal with this issue and of the RCMP dressed up in riot and sniper gear to deal with peaceful resistance to a perceived environmental and health danger. We are sneaking into the same police state we see rolling out south of the border. Finally I am ashamed of my fellow New Brunswicker's who have been posting racial slurs and stereotypes, is the best you can come up with. I need to leave this back woods place. My rant of the day. Cheers.

    3. Do you honestly believe that the actions of this group does ANYTHING to provide support for their culture. They need to take a good look at there own actions to see if they are doing anything more than re-enforcing the stereotype and racism!!!!! Blocking traffic, burning cars is not a made up news story. They did it, and have done it before. No sympathy or support here, and I expect most of the population feels the same.

    4. Who is kidding who on "protecting mother earth" this is about money. This is about crying loud enough to get a bigger share of NB's resources.

  8. We live in a world of complacency. I appreciate nature and whatever clean water can be found these days and I'm glad there is a gatekeeper to watch over it.

    ReplyDelete
  9. There are, like so many, 2 sides to a story then the truth. Where this lies remains to be seen. Fracking brings jobs that this province desperately needs. Fracking has environmental risks.

But when two sides clash like what happened yesterday, it's akin to 2 gangs showing up at a public park and the only losers is the community who has to pay for the damage. Unacceptable to damage over 1 million dollars in public property.

Shame on the destruction and shame on the RCMP. Mostly though....shame on David Alward's government for sitting idly by for the last 3 weeks without getting both sides to a negotiation table. But I guess we have come to expect this government to sit on it's hands. That is what they have done for years!!

    1. I agree (I think) with your comment here.. as long as we create clear separation of the issues.. I don't see the issue is fracking.. that is another dialogue. I think the issue here is the ability to accept or not accept the rather frequent road blockade practice that the Natives have adopted, and how we manage these blockades. I (as moderator) remain neutral on this issue.. but I do think the real conversation must be on the practice of road blockade as a form of protest.

      Delete
    2. I agree. it should be 2 issues and while I don't think fracking is right for all areas because the geology of each specific area is different, fracking could contaminate ground water in some regions and perhaps in other areas there could be no effect. In NS, when they built Scott Paper at Abercrombie point, and ran the waste water into a very pristine area called Boat Harbour, the politicians said you could drink the water but of course even today that is not the case. I don't think we can trust big oil or the politicians to tell the truth on these matters, science has to dictate what should happen and of course there will be mistakes. Native blockades and the disruptions they cause are a completely separate issue and I will offer my views on that at another time. I don't think 2% of native protesters have a clue about what their protest is really about and it is a band wagon they are hopping on.

  10. Fracking is just another way of squeezing the last drops of oil out of the planet. Refining the tar sands was not financially viable until the value of oil crossed a certain threshold, nor was fracking until it rose even higher. It's pretty easy to tout the environmental risks of the tar sands and fracking, but remember it all stems from supply and demand. The whole fracking issue is just a result of our demand for more oil-derived products. If there is money to be made, oil companies will keep supplying us with oil, regardless of the environmental costs. We can't burn fuel and use plastics on the one hand and at the same time demand that oil companies stop extracting it, which takes more and more aggressive methods as the world oil reservoirs dwindle. Even if the fracking companies are driven off, and arctic drilling is prevented, mankind will come back to these same sites in 20 years saying "okay, seriously this time, we need this oil now."

We also have to remember from the supply and demand model that even if we drive those nasty greedy oil companies out of our communities, they will just go to the middle east and Africa and squeeze more oil out of there, at tremendous human cost (as in tanks and machine guns, not police cars.) If we wanted to stop the tar sands and stop fracking, we would have done it 30 years ago. Our infrastructure is built around oil and we are not going to get away from it without consumer concessions and economic cost; ie two more things to complain about.

    1. If fracking didn't happen until it hit a certain threshold, the threshold must be pretty low! Do you know how long fracking has been around? 2000? 1990? 1980? Keep going.....Fracking oil and gas started in 1947. This is not new technology.

      Delete
    2. I should also note that I do agree with your comment.

      Delete
    3. Fair enough, I didn't look into the actual technology behind it, I just reasoned that companies only do something when it has become financially viable; in this case they may have held out until now for other reasons, perhaps geographic or geological specifics.

Why in hell is this tying up so much time in question period in parliament and the Prime Ministers time??? is it not time that we stop handling kids like kids? when are we going to stop making excuses for the actions of children. i'm not talking about kids in the ages of 4-6 and such. but kids like the one in the above article whose committed a serious crime at age 14. if you've committed an offence at age 14 as serious to the above crime i'm sorry you've already moved from being a child making young decisions to being an adult. why are you treated and tried as youth as if you were 4 years old. we are too loose on offenses by children. and it doesn't have to be offenses as serious as murder. but could be what would be less serious in nature then murder to such crimes as bullying, thief, etc... we've become so relaxed with the youth of today that they think they can get away with murder now. if you want to instill good logic and morals in youth then it comes from authority not from coddling. when i was growing up i'd never back talk my teacher or an adult. we use to live in fear of getting strapped in school. and you know what, i'm not even sure that any kid ever did get the strap but you at least feared it enough to behave and not act a fool. i could go on but then i'd be rambling and not ranting. plus i fear the moderator!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. How about. if the youth is too young to sentence incarceration time.. then the parents are required to be imprisoned until the youth becomes of age that they can finish the prison term.. then possibly, with a little skin in the game - these youths will be parented properly. As it is the parents responsibility to raise law abiding citizens, not the responsibility of the community.

    2. It's a tough call. I think that the jail system, especially the US jail system, needs some serious revamping. This is a bit of an extreme case; murder is obviously indicative of underlying criminal tendencies, but I would argue that kid's shouldn't go to jail for things like theft -- they just become better criminals in jails as it stands now. Corporal punishment... Another tough debate, I think it's a necessary institution but inherently impossible to control; when does discipline just become abuse? This observer has no idea! Coming back to your point, and agreeing with it, I think if a kid is like 5 or 6 and accidentally kills someone their situation should be reviewed but they shouldn't go to jail--but I distinctly remember being able to make my own decisions when I was 14. I would say that this kid is old enough to answer for what he's done with a full sentence; as in not letting him out at 18 as is the rule for youth nowadays.

      Delete
    3. well i have two main problems...why are idenities always concealed? why are their crimes as youth not kept in the record book?
but my orginal point i believe still stands that youth get off a lot easier then they should. let me use this scenario as an example, i get drunk on a Saturday night and steal a car for a joy ride....then for discussion, a 15 year old does the same thing...you can't tell me I'm treated the same as the 15 year old. i believe age doesn't matter to offense. the reason behind it is stupidity. i would also argue that if he's committing those offenses at 15, he's more likely to be a repeat offender then i would be at my age.

      Delete
    4. and to the moderator's point i completely disagree...parents shouldn't be responsible for their children at all, in the sense of doing the time for the crime. i believe you do the crime you do the time. i think it's another way of coddling children to say oh you did something wrong...let me cover for your mistake.

      Delete
    5. Mr Maritimecbass.... git yer head out of your ass.. if a kid is a rotten little bastard, they did not come out of the womb like like this, they were raised with no morals, respect, consciousness or care for others.. That came from mom and dad.. so I don't see this as a coddling issue.. I see this as irresponsibility to the community by allowing your kids to be punks.. so who best should pay for that.. The parents.. LOCK EM UP!

  16. PARANOIA at its best! British Columbia Civil Liberties Assoc is Suing CSCEC (Communications Security Establishment Canada - Our version of the NSA).. for their spying on us is unconstitutional. WHO GIVES A SHIT - yeah, they are tapping our phones, reading our texts and emails.. so what?? Do you think that CSCEC gives a crap about your sexting, your infidelities.. are they gonna call your girlfriend/boyfriend that you have been chatting with someone else.. NOPE.. They are trying to defend our civil liberties against terrorism etc. And if they are not allowed to tap in on electronic conversation.. then how can they get insight to illegal activities. They are not interested in your texts - they are interested in plans to terrorize our country.. So BCLA shut the hell up, don't waste our tax dollars on ridiculous lawsuits.. and enjoy the safety and security that CSEC provides us.
